Before We Begin

Friend,

While the following content provides a comprehensive look at the ways modernity interacts with our health, it is vital that you do not become overwhelmed or obsessed with any of them. This is easier said than done—but it must be done.

Knowing is difficult; forgetting, even more so. So, rather than wanting you to “forget” about what you read here, when the time calls for it, I would much prefer that you instead trusted yourself to deal with whatever the world throws your way.

The objective of this program is to heighten your power, not to foster a victim mentality. Know that obsession is a toxin of its own kind. Be aware, but always pragmatic. Be cautious, but never cowardly.

The human body is a resilient and adaptive system, forged by divine hands for generations. Behind your conscious experience lays an organism wiser than you could ever conceive. Every single cell in your body works in harmony, adapting, defending, and thriving in the face of its environment. Sometimes they triumph; others, not. But they always strive.

Finally, keep in mind that this program provides guidelines, not gospel. Like you, I am on a journey of continual learning and growth. There will be instances when it's prudent to set aside specific advice or principles. You may even find that you disagree with some of my points altogether. That would only be natural, and I welcome your feedback and look forward to learning from what you have to say.

In any case, I hope you find this program helpful.

Without further ado, let’s begin.

Introduction

Whenever we decide to take control of our health, our minds automatically turn to nutrition—what to eat, what not to eat; sugar this, sugar that. This makes sense: nutrition is, after all, the most intimate interaction we have with our material environment. But what about all the other ones?

Think for a moment of all the ways your body interacts with your surroundings every day. Take your skin, for instance: your largest organ.

How many different fabrics does it come in contact with every day? Let’s see: there’s your favorite shirt, jeans, underwear, towels, sheeted mattress, pillowcase, rugs, cloths… and let’s not forget the mighty toilet paper (or, for the most demanding glutes out there, “flushable wet wipes”, which are definitely not baby wipes). Do these interactions matter at all? Can your skin actually “absorb” fabrics?

We’ll talk about this throughout the program.

What about synthetic chemicals? There’s obviously your shampoo and shower gel, moisturizer, deodorant… but there's also indirect exposure to ingredients in your laundry detergent, for instance, and other household cleaning products. And have you considered water? Though it doesn’t penetrate your skin per se, it does carry chemicals that do. Do these microscopic interactions matter at all? Are they having a say in the fate of your dermis? And of your life?

We’ll talk about this throughout the program.

What else? Let’s keep going. Your skin also interacts with light. Your smartphone, laptop, tablet, TV… they all emit light that shines on your outermost layer; so do all the lights all over your house, workplace and city as a whole. And let’s not forget the one stemming from our star, to which we owe life itself. Can flashing a phone on your face for several hours a day have any sort of impact on your skin? Could it have a systemic impact, too?
