Beeped

A few years ago, my girlfriend and I were randomly talking about shampoos, and I asked her if she had heard of the brand I was using.

After all, it was a "good product" from a "good brand", that I had proudly purchased at the nearest pharmacy.

• "Yes... I know it", she said, all but enthusiastic.
• "And you don't like it?", I asked.
• "Not really... it's full of endocrine disruptors; it messes with your hormones."

Immediately, two questions popped into my head:

1. How the hell did she know that? and,
2. Why hadn't she told me sooner?

The answer to the second question remains a mystery even today, but the one to the first was surprisingly simple:

She had previously scanned the product with Yuka, an app that gives "health scores" to shampoos, shower gels, toothpastes, etc. based on their ingredient list. The lower the Yuka score, the more harmful the product’s ingredients.

I immediately downloaded the app, rushed to the bathroom and began scanning my personal arsenal.
